The Origins of Cosmetic Dentistry
Did you know that cosmetic dentistry is a 9,000 year old practice? Give or take a few years, that is. Ancient remains of human teeth and jaws from around the world have been found illustrating the use of a wide array of cosmetic dentistry procedures, bearing various kinds of dental applications, contraptions and ornamentations. The earliest known remnants of cosmetic dentistry were discovered in settlements from an early Bronze Age civilization in the Indus Valley, circa 7,000 B.C.; a region today known as Pakistan and northwest India.
Early Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures
These findings revealed evidence of surgical and cosmetic dental procedures involving equipment such as flint-tipped bow drills to treat dental ailments. Crude bridges were constructed of gold or silver wire to restore teeth, often using donor teeth. Eventually caps and bridges artfully smithed of gold were fashioned, both as a functional application, as well as an indication of status or tribal position.
The Mayan Factor
The Mayan civilization were especially masterful in early cosmetic dentistry procedures and practices. They are credited for laying much of the groundwork for cosmetic dentistry procedures we use today. The Mayans demonstrated a highly sophisticated understanding of tooth anatomy in the methods of dental ornamentation they were famous for today. Drilling tiny holes into teeth without penetrating or damaging the pulp within, they used a natural adhesive made of resin and crushed bone to to inlay precious gemstones within the teeth, as shown in the image above. The Mayans were also known to etch meaningful and decorative notches and designs into the external layer of teeth.
Looking Back
It’s fascinating to look back and recognize just how closely many of our priorities and desires regarding modern cosmetic dentistry truly mirror the priorities and desires of earlier civilizations. There is a clear bridge between the cultures of yesterday and today regarding the need for practical, functional dental solutions that restore or enhance appearance. Thankfully, we have the good fortune of benefiting from many technological advances in cosmetic dentistry procedures since the days of our earlier ancestors.
