The History of Cosmetic Dentistry

The Origins of Cosmetic Dentistry
Did you know that cosmetic dentistry is a 9,000 year old practice? Give or take a few years, that is. Ancient remains of human teeth and jaws from around the world have been found illustrating the use of a wide array of cosmetic dentistry procedures, bearing various kinds of dental applications, contraptions and ornamentations. The earliest known remnants of cosmetic dentistry were discovered in settlements from an early Bronze Age civilization in the Indus Valley, circa 7,000 B.C.; a region today known as Pakistan and northwest India.

Early Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures
These findings revealed evidence of surgical and cosmetic dental procedures involving equipment such as flint-tipped bow drills to treat dental ailments. Crude bridges were constructed of gold or silver wire to restore teeth, often using donor teeth. Eventually caps and bridges artfully smithed of gold were fashioned, both as a functional application, as well as an indication of status or tribal position.

The Mayan Factor
The Mayan civilization were especially masterful in early cosmetic dentistry procedures and practices. They are credited for laying much of the groundwork for cosmetic dentistry procedures we use today. The Mayans demonstrated a highly sophisticated understanding of tooth anatomy in the methods of dental ornamentation they were famous for today. Drilling tiny holes into teeth without penetrating or damaging the pulp within, they used a natural adhesive made of resin and crushed bone to to inlay precious gemstones within the teeth, as shown in the image above. The Mayans were also known to etch meaningful and decorative notches and designs into the external layer of teeth.

Looking Back
It’s fascinating to look back and recognize just how closely many of our priorities and desires regarding modern cosmetic dentistry truly mirror the priorities and desires of earlier civilizations. There is a clear bridge between the cultures of yesterday and today regarding the need for practical, functional dental solutions that restore or enhance appearance. Thankfully, we have the good fortune of benefiting from many technological advances in cosmetic dentistry procedures since the days of our earlier ancestors.

Perfect Smile Dentistry

What’s the first thing people notice when you walk into a room?
That’s a good question. Many say it’s the eyes. Others might discuss your clothing, or a unique scarf, tie, or piece of jewelry you are wearing. Some more candid types may mention certain, “ahem”, physical attributes they find particularly attractive, such as a long elegant neck or a strong, masculine jaw. But in truth, the thing people most notice when you walk into a room - when present - is your smile.

Your Smile
It’s the most effective communication tool you possess. It even trumps your words in terms of the impression you leave behind. Paired with a natural confidence exuded through the eyes, you have an unbeatable combination. Have you ever stood back and observed a person with a winning smile and a clear, confident gaze moving through a crowd? Then you probably noticed lots of hand shaking, back slapping, and other affirming, welcoming physical reactions. A path being parted. People lining up to join in the greeting. You probably observed that what they said was not as important as how they said it.

Confidence is King
There’s no question that in today’s modern culture, we are drawn to success. We gravitate to those that seem to have the answers to our problems - whether they describe themselves as an authority or not. What’s the magnetic common ground these perceived “authorities” have in common? It’s quite simple, and quite simple for you to achieve as well: confidence.

The Key to Success
We as a people are drawn to confidence. And why not? Why wouldn’t we seek to discover hidden answers to our problems from those who seem to hold the key? A confident appearance is one of the most powerful tools leading to success in the business world. It can just as powerfully ingratiate you within the realms of social circles as well.

Perfect  Smile Dentistry
Realistically speaking, who doesn’t want to be more confident? The real question is this: if there was something you could do to automatically boost your confidence, quickly and even easily, would you do it? That’s where perfect smile dentistry comes in.
